Popeea ceramic range

Crafting contemporary ceramics

London, United Kingdom

The Popeea ceramic range was developed for Casa Popeea, a boutique hotel within the historic Hellenic quarter of Brăila, Romania. The design by Manea Kella was executed in collaboration with London based ceramicist Melina Xenaki, featuring straight lines and simple forms (Fig. 01-03). The range has been influenced by salvaged Greek and Ottoman pottery (Fig. 04-06) exhibited within the Museum of Brăila.

The ceramics have been conceived as decorative and functional objects within the hotel reception, restaurant and spa. The objects strive for expressive purity, without neglecting durability and versatility. Making the ceramics required anthracite and black clay to be fired twice and a transparent powdered glaze was used to provide a contrasting aesthetic.

The entire range is hand made in Hackney, London.
